Did you see on Facebook, our sheep got haircuts?

In many ways, shearing a sheep is a lot like getting a haircut. Just like your hair grows and grows until it hangs in your eyes, sheep wool is always growing. Wool has to be shorn at least once a year to keep sheep comfortable, especially in warmer climates—like how some people get shorter haircuts for summer. We don’t want our sheep to overheat! And just like a human haircut, shearing doesn’t hurt the sheep. Shearing does leave sheep vulnerable to the elements, so extra care is needed to protect them until their wool grows enough to insulate them.

A skilled shearer, like you see in the picture, is needed to quickly and efficiently take the wool without nicking or injuring the sheep. Most shearers use electric shears or shearing machines, but some choose the more delicate art of shearing with a manual tool, like scissors. The best sheep-shearers can remove the wool in one whole piece in under two minutes. How’s that for efficiency? There is even a natural chemical that allows sheep to drop wool on their own!

If you’re visiting Rawhide Ranch for summer camp, you’ll be able to see the beginnings of new fleece on our shorn sheep. By the end of summer, their wool will be all bushy again!

I brought my daughters’ Girl Scout troops here for a weekend camp a couple weekends ago, and it was a fun-packed weekend of riding, vaulting (actually doing simple gymnastics on a huge draft horse named Lucy Belle), animal care (feeding and caring for the goats and sheep and grooming the ponies), and very interesting animal science and horse science classes/tours. I liked the fact that even us adults/leaders got the chance to ride – usually the kids get to have all the fun!

The staff was really incredible – you can tell that they are really “horse people” — really know, understand and love horses. They are also extremely good with teaching/ leading groups of kids; very patient and understanding. By the end, our group of 7-10 year olds (many of whom had little to no riding experience) were all riding quite well and able to lead and direct their horses – I was really happy and impressed. We finished off Saturday w/ a campfire w/ skits and songs, and there was a horse show on Sunday that all the kids participated in.

The Ranch is in a beautiful setting – trees, landscaping, and a Western town theme. We stayed in a “Schoolhouse” w/ bunks, and the bathrooms had hot showers, toilets and running water – not bad for “camping.” There’s both an outdoor and indoor riding arena, so if it rains (which it happened to do w/ us on Sunday), it does’t have to “dampen” your trip. Meals weren’t gourmet, but were very good for “camp” — we had burgers, fried chicken w/ mashed potatoes and gravy, and for breakfast, eggs & sausage one day, and waffles the next. I was just glad I didn’t have to cook or wash dishes! All the girls (and even us adults) had a great time, and I would absolutely recommend Rawhide Ranch! Amber E., San Diego

Dear Rawhide Ranch

I just wanted to write to thank you for the great experience your camp provided for my 7 year old daughter. She has not stopped talking about all the fun since we picked her up on Saturday. She can’t wait to go back. Her experience and memories were well worth the money and I highly recommend the camp to all my friends. Cheers…….

I ♥ camp!! I would like to thank Rawhide for truly making me who I am today. For teaching me more things than I can even think of. For 14 years I have always thought of you as my home. Thank you camp!!! Oh, and without Rawhide I probably would not have gotten into horses, or barrels, so thanks for that too. =)

Los Alamitos Troop 121 had an Awesome time at Rawhide this weekend! It was a truly magical experience! They built memories to last a lifetime!

I just wanted to send my ‘thank-you’ to all the staff & counselors at your facility. My daughter just came back from the recent equestrian camp that ended on the 26th. I just wanted to say how much fun she had & how she came back a much happier person. Thank you for taking good care of all the girls for us! God Bless.
